Why is my laptop so slow?
Slow is a symptom with four common causes, and they need four different fixes. Buying RAM for a laptop that is waiting on its hard disk does nothing; cleaning a fan for a laptop with 4 GB of RAM does nothing. Here is how to tell them apart.
Quick answer
If the laptop has a spinning hard disk, that is the cause and an SSD is the fix, even on a ten-year-old machine. If it already has an SSD but freezes with many tabs and apps open, it is RAM. If it is slow and hot and loud, the cooling is blocked and the processor is throttling itself. If it was fine last month and is slow now, look at software first: updates, startup clutter, malware, a full disk.

Safe checks you can do first
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → Performance. If the disk shows 100% for minutes after start-up and the type says HDD, that is your answer.
- On the same screen, check Memory. If it sits above 85–90% with your normal apps open, RAM is the limit.
- Feel the base and listen. Hot and loud with slowness points at cooling.
- Check free space: below about 15 GB Windows misbehaves.
- Restart (not shut down and lid-close) and see whether it is quick for the first minute; if so, software running in the background is the drag.
What not to do
- Do not install "PC cleaner" or "speed booster" apps; most add clutter or worse.
- Do not buy RAM online without knowing the type and whether your RAM is soldered.
- Do not keep a failing hard disk running just because it still works; copy your files first.

Will an SSD make my old laptop faster?
Yes, and by more than any other single change, if it currently has a hard disk. Boot in seconds, programs open at once. The processor stays the same, so heavy work is still limited.
Why is my laptop slow after a factory reset?
Because the reset did not change the hardware. A hard disk is still a hard disk. Slow after reset is the clearest sign the drive is the bottleneck.
Can overheating make a laptop lag?
Yes. The processor slows itself down when it gets too hot. If the laptop is hot and loud when it lags, service the cooling before buying parts.
How much RAM do I need?
8 GB for everyday use, 16 GB for heavy browsing plus office work, calls and gaming. Beyond that only for video editing or virtual machines.
