Quick answer
Two different things break: the hinge itself (metal, wears stiff or snaps) and the plastic mounts it screws into (the lid or base cracks around it). A hinge alone is a quick swap. Torn-out mounts need the cover replaced or the mount rebuilt, which customers call "fabrication". Stop opening the lid wide until it is seen; the cable inside the hinge is the expensive part.

Before you decide
The hinge is broken on one side. Can I keep using the laptop?
Use it as little as possible with the lid at one angle. Every open and close grinds the mount further and stresses the display cable. It is a small repair now and a screen repair later.
Can a broken hinge damage the display?
Yes. The display cable runs through the hinge; a loose hinge bends and eventually breaks it, giving flicker, lines or a black screen. That is why we check the cable during every hinge job.
What is hinge "fabrication"?
Rebuilding the plastic mount the hinge screws into when the original cover is unavailable. We use inserts and reinforcement, and you see the result before the laptop is closed up.
