How to know if your laptop battery needs replacing
Batteries wear out gradually, then suddenly. The signs are consistent across HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS and Acer, and Windows can measure the wear for you in a couple of minutes.
Quick answer
Replace the battery when runtime has fallen to a fraction of what it was, when the laptop shuts down with 20–40% still showing, or when the battery report shows full-charge capacity far below design capacity. Replace it urgently if the case, trackpad or keyboard is bulging: that is a swollen pack. If the laptop simply will not charge, test the charger and port first; that is a different fault.

Safe checks you can do first
- Windows: open Command Prompt and run
powercfg /batteryreport; open the saved report and compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity. Below about 60–70% of design is worn. - Check the cycle count in the same report; several hundred cycles with poor runtime confirms wear.
- Look at the laptop on a flat surface: any rocking, a lifted trackpad or a bulging base means swelling.
- Time the runtime doing normal work; compare with what it was when new.
What not to do
- Do not press on a swollen battery or keep charging it.
- Do not "calibrate" by draining to zero repeatedly; it accelerates wear.
- Do not buy a battery for a laptop that will not charge at all before the charger is tested.
