Laptop plugged in but not charging: what it usually is

Likely causes

CommonWorn battery

After a few hundred cycles the pack stops accepting a full charge. Windows shows "plugged in, not charging" at a fixed percentage or the runtime collapses. Battery replacement

CommonFaulty adapter or cable

Frayed cables and tired bricks deliver too little current. The laptop may run but never charge.

CommonWorn charging port or DC jack

Charging only at an angle, or when the cable is wedged, is the port. Port repair

SometimesBattery-care limit or driver

Many laptops cap charging at 60–80% to protect the battery. A stuck battery driver can also freeze the reading.

The chip that manages charging has failed. The battery and adapter are fine, and only a board-level repair fixes it. Chip-level repair

Safe checks you can do first

1. Look at the charger light. If it goes off when you plug into the laptop, there is a short on the laptop side; stop and bring it in.
2. Try a known-good charger of the same wattage if you can borrow one. If it charges, your adapter is the fault.
3. Check the maker's battery app or Windows settings for a charge limit (often called battery care, conservation or health mode).
4. Feel the plug in the port: if charging returns when you angle or push it, the jack is worn.
5. On Windows, run powercfg /batteryreport in a command prompt and compare design capacity with full-charge capacity. A big gap means a worn battery.

What not to do

• Do not buy a battery before the charger and port are ruled out; it is the most common wasted purchase we see.
• Do not use a lower-wattage or unbranded charger for long; it strains the charging circuit.
• Do not keep pushing a loose plug; it cracks the solder joints around the jack.

When it is a repair, and which one

If your checks point at the battery, it is a battery replacement. If the adapter is fine and the port is solid but nothing charges, it is a charging-circuit repair on the board, which we do at component level. If it charges only at an angle, it is a port repair. We test all four in order at the bench; diagnosis is free.
