How to choose a laptop repair shop

You are handing over an expensive machine with your files on it, usually in a hurry. These are the questions that tell you most about a workshop, and the answers we think you should expect. Hold us to them.

Quick answer

Ask whether the diagnosis is free and what happens if you decline; ask for one written price before work; ask which part grade and what warranty; ask who touches your data; and ask whether they repair boards at component level or only replace them. Clear answers to those five say more than any star rating.

The eight questions

  • Is the diagnosis free, and is there a charge if I decline? A workshop can usually check for free; doorstep services often charge a visit fee, sometimes waived on repair. Either is fine if stated up front.
  • Will I get one written price before work starts? One price covering parts, labour and GST, agreed before anything is opened further.
  • Which part grade, and what warranty? Original-grade or compatible, and how long the part and the labour are covered.
  • Do you repair boards at component level, or only replace them? This single question separates workshops that can save a "dead" laptop from those that cannot.
  • What happens to my data? Whether the drive leaves the laptop, who can access it, and whether a backup can be taken first.
  • Can I see the old part? A reasonable request and an easy yes.
  • What if the repair does not work? Ask before, not after.
  • Where is the workshop? A real address you can walk into beats a call centre and a courier.

Signals worth trusting

  • Reviews that describe the fault and the fix, not just "good service".
  • A named technician customers mention repeatedly.
  • Willingness to say "this is not worth repairing".
  • A quote that stays the same after the laptop is opened, or a call explaining exactly why it changed.
  • A physical bench, not just a pickup service.

Signals worth questioning

  • A firm price for a board fault before anyone has looked at the board.
  • "Lowest price guaranteed" with nothing to compare.
  • Pressure to decide immediately.
  • Vagueness about part grade or warranty.
  • No invoice.

Our answers

So you can judge us by the same list:

  • The check at our Whitefield bench is free, with no obligation.
  • You get one written price before work starts, and we call you with what we found.
  • We name the part grade and the warranty on the quote.
  • We repair boards at component level; that is our speciality, and the reason many customers arrive after another centre said "replace".
  • Your drive stays in the laptop unless the repair needs it out, and we can back it up first.
  • You can see and keep the old part.
  • One workshop, on Whitefield Main Road, first floor, opposite Dress Circle Mall. Walk in during opening hours.

Questions people ask

Before you decide

Can I trust a technician with my laptop?

Ask the data question directly and see how specific the answer is. A workshop that has thought about it will tell you where the drive goes and what is not accessed.

How do I verify a laptop repair service is genuine?

A physical address you can visit, an invoice, reviews that describe real faults, and a willingness to put the price and warranty in writing.

Should I go to the authorised service centre instead?

In warranty, yes, always. Out of warranty it depends on the fault: authorised centres replace assemblies, an independent workshop can repair the component that failed.
