Laptop charger not working: is it the adapter or the laptop?
A charger that has stopped working is the cheapest thing that can go wrong with a laptop, but only if it really is the charger. The same symptom can come from the port or the charging circuit inside the laptop, and buying a new adapter will not fix those.
Quick answer
If the charger light stays off on its own, unplugged from the laptop, the adapter or its cable has failed. If the light is on but goes dim or off the moment you plug into the laptop, the fault is on the laptop side, often a short, so stop plugging it in. If charging works only with the plug held at an angle, it is the laptop's port. A known-good charger of the same wattage settles it in a minute.
Likely causes
- CommonFailed adapter or cable
- The cable breaks inside near the plug or the brick, or the brick itself fails. The light flickers when you move the cable, or stays off. Most adapter bricks are sealed units and are replaced rather than repaired. Chargers in stock
- CommonWrong or underpowered charger
- A charger with lower wattage than the original, or a USB-C charger without the right power profile, may run the laptop but never charge it, or not start it at all.
- CommonWorn charging port or DC jack
- The plug feels loose, or charging returns only when it is angled or pushed in. Port repair
- SometimesShort or charging-circuit fault in the laptop
- The adapter protects itself and its light dims or goes out when connected. The fault is on the board, and a new charger would be wasted money. Chip-level repair
Safe checks you can do first
- Plug the charger into the wall only, without the laptop. A light that stays off means the adapter or cable.
- Now connect the laptop. If the light dims or goes out, stop: the fault is in the laptop and repeated attempts can make it worse.
- Bend the cable gently near both ends while watching the light. Flickering means a broken wire inside.
- Read the label on the brick: the wattage (W) and voltage must match the laptop's original charger.
- Try a known-good charger of the same type and wattage if you can borrow one.
What not to do
- Do not keep using a charger with a cut, taped or melted cable; it can overheat.
- Do not buy a cheaper, lower-wattage charger to save money; it strains the charging circuit and may never charge the battery.
- Do not keep plugging in a laptop that makes the charger light go out.
When it is a repair, and which one
Bring the laptop and the charger together. We test the charger first, with a meter, before touching the laptop. If the adapter has failed, we fit a replacement of the correct wattage for your model. If the adapter is fine, we check the port and the charging circuit, and give you the fault and one written price before any repair. The check is free.
Charging port and power repair
What it usually costs
What decides the price
- A replacement adapter is the cheapest outcome
- Original or compatible adapter, and its wattage
- Plug-in jack vs board-soldered jack vs USB-C port
- A charging-circuit repair is board-level work: the failed component decides the price
We quote after a free diagnosis of your specific model, in writing, before any work starts. There is no charge if you decide not to go ahead.
Your data
A charger fault never touches your files. If the laptop is completely dead and you need something urgently, the drive can be read in another machine while the repair is assessed.

Questions people ask
Before you decide
Can a laptop charger be repaired?
Most adapter bricks are sealed and are replaced rather than repaired, and a damaged cable is not worth patching because of the heat risk. What matters more is confirming the charger really is the fault before buying one.
Is a compatible (non-original) charger safe?
A good compatible charger with the correct voltage, wattage and plug from a reputable maker is fine, and it is what most people use. Very cheap unbranded adapters are the ones to avoid. Original vs compatible parts.
Can I use a phone charger on a USB-C laptop?
It may charge very slowly or not at all, because most phone chargers deliver far less power than a laptop needs. Use a USB-C charger rated at the wattage of the original.
Do you keep chargers in stock?
Yes, for the common HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS and Acer models. Send the model number or a photo of the old adapter's label on WhatsApp and we tell you whether the right one is on the shelf.
Not sure which one you have?
Describe it in a sentence or send a photo. We tell you what it is before you spend anything.
