Laptop not turning on: what it usually is
A laptop that does nothing at all is frightening but rarely finished. The power has to get from the wall through the adapter, the jack, the charging circuit and the power stages before anything lights up, and any one of those can be the single failed link.
Quick answer
Work from the wall inwards. Adapter light on? Then try a hard reset: unplug, battery out if possible, hold power for 30 seconds, plug in, try again. Still nothing, and the adapter light stays on when plugged in? The fault is inside: usually the charging circuit or the power section of the board, both component repairs. Adapter light goes off when you plug in? A short circuit; stop and bring it in.

- The laptop runs the battery flat and cannot recharge. Test with a known-good adapter first.

Safe checks you can do first
- Check the adapter light. Off with the adapter alone: the adapter is dead. On alone but off when plugged into the laptop: a short in the laptop.
- Hard reset: unplug, remove the battery if removable, hold the power button 30 seconds, reconnect the adapter only, press power.
- Borrow a known-good adapter of the same wattage and connector.
- Look for any sign of life: a charging LED, a fan twitch, a keyboard backlight. Any of these means the board is partly alive and the picture is worth reading.
- Remember what happened before: spill, storm, an update, a drop, or nothing at all.
What not to do
- Do not open the laptop and probe with a multimeter unless you know the board; shorts are made worse by guessing.
- Do not keep it on charge for hours hoping it will "wake up" if the adapter light goes off when connected.
- Do not buy a new battery for a laptop that will not run on the adapter either.
When it is a repair, and which one
This is the bread and butter of chip-level repair. We measure the board's power rails in sequence and the first missing rail shows where the fault is: input protection, charging IC, a shorted component, or a power stage. Most are repaired on the board you own, with your data untouched. Where the processor or chipset itself has died we say so and discuss whether a board makes sense.

Why won't my laptop turn on but has power?
If the charging light is on but the power button does nothing, the button, its cable, or the board's power-on circuit is the suspect. All three are diagnosable and the first two are cheap.
Dell / HP / Lenovo laptop not turning on: is there a reset?
All three respond to the same hard reset: unplug, battery out if possible, hold power 30 seconds, adapter in, try again. Some Dell and Lenovo models also have a tiny reset pinhole on the base. If that does not help, it is not a settings problem.
Can a dead motherboard be repaired?
Very often. "Dead" usually means one failed component in the power path. We replace that component rather than the board. The rare exception is a dead processor or chipset.
Is it worth repairing, or should I buy a new laptop?
Depends on the fault and the machine. A charging-IC repair on a decent five-year-old laptop is worth it; a heavily corroded board on a slow old machine is not. Diagnosis is free, so you decide with facts.
