Laptop keyboard keys not working
A few dead keys, a dead row, or keys that type by themselves almost always mean the keyboard matrix has failed and the keyboard is replaced. But a whole keyboard going dead at once, or odd behaviour after an update, can be software or a cable. Rule those out first.

Safe checks you can do first
- Plug in a USB keyboard. If it works fine, the laptop is fine and the fault is the built-in keyboard or its cable.
- Restart and try the keys at the BIOS or login screen. Working there means software; dead there means hardware.
- Check Windows accessibility settings for Filter Keys or Sticky Keys turned on.
- Check the language and layout if you get wrong characters.
What not to do
- Do not pour cleaner into the keyboard.
- Do not pry off many keycaps to clean; the clips break and the caps are model-specific.
- Do not ignore keys that died after a spill; the board may be corroding underneath.
When it is a repair, and which one
We confirm hardware from a live boot, open the palmrest, check for residue and the ribbon connectors, and replace the keyboard unit, or the palmrest where the keyboard is built in. If a spill caused it, we check the board first so the new keyboard does not go on a board that is failing.
