Spilled water on your laptop: what to do right now
The damage from a spill happens in two stages: the short circuit in the first seconds, and the corrosion over the following days. You can stop the first by cutting power immediately, and the second by getting the board cleaned quickly. Drying and hoping does neither.

Right now: hold the power button until it is off. Unplug the charger. Remove the battery if it is removable. Turn the laptop upside down in a V shape on a towel. Do not switch it on to "see if it works", and do not charge it. Then call us: the sooner the board is cleaned, the better the odds.

Safe checks you can do first
- Power off, unplug, battery out if removable, upside down on a towel. That is the whole list.
- Note what the liquid was. Water is the least harmful; tea, coffee, juice and sugary drinks corrode fastest.
- Note whether the laptop was on, and whether it turned itself off.
- Send us a photo of where the spill went; it helps us prepare.
What not to do
- Do not switch it on to test it. Every second powered with liquid inside is more damage.
- Do not charge it.
- Do not put it in rice; rice does nothing for the board and leaves dust inside.
- Do not use a hair dryer or heater; heat drives moisture under chips and warps plastics.
- Do not wait "a few days to dry". Corrosion works while you wait.
When it is a repair, and which one
The laptop is fully disassembled, the board is cleaned (ultrasonic where appropriate) and inspected under magnification, corroded and shorted components are replaced, and the keyboard is replaced if residue has reached it. We tell you the odds honestly: a quick, water-only spill on a laptop that was switched off promptly has good odds; a sugary spill on a laptop left running for days has worse odds. Nothing is charged until we know.

Before you decide
Can a water-damaged laptop be repaired?
Often, yes, and the odds depend mostly on how fast power was cut and how soon the board is cleaned. We have revived many. We also tell you plainly when corrosion has gone too far.
How long should I wait after spilling water before turning it on?
Do not turn it on at all until the inside has been inspected. "Drying" a laptop does not remove the residue that causes corrosion; only cleaning does.
I spilled water on the keyboard only. Is that less serious?
Usually, but the keyboard sits right above the board and liquid runs down. Get it checked; a keyboard replacement is a small job, a corroded board later is not.
Will my data be lost?
Almost never from a spill. The drive is well protected and we recover data from it even when the board is beyond repair.
