Laptop turns on but the screen stays black
The laptop is clearly alive, so this is rarely a dead machine. The question is whether the picture is missing (screen side) or the laptop is not getting far enough to make one (board side). One test tells you which.
Quick answer
Connect an external monitor. If you get a picture there, the laptop is working and the fault is in the lid: panel, backlight or display cable. If the external monitor is also blank, the laptop is not completing its start-up: reseat the RAM if you can, then it is a board-level diagnosis. A blinking caps-lock or power light is the laptop telling you a code; count the blinks.
Likely causes

- Shine a torch at an angle: if you can faintly see the desktop, the panel works but its backlight has failed. Panel or backlight circuit.
- SometimesRAM not seated or failed
- A classic "on but nothing" cause. Blink codes on HP and Dell often point here. Reseating a module fixes some cases.
- SometimesBoard fault: no POST
- A power rail, the PCH or BIOS stops the board before video. Diagnosed on the bench with the rails measured. Chip-level repair
- RareGraphics chip
- Artefacts before the black, or no display on either screen with fans at full speed, can be the GPU. GPU faults
Safe checks you can do first
- External monitor test via HDMI or USB-C. This single check splits the problem in half.
- Torch test: tilt a bright light at the black screen and look for a faint image. Faint image means backlight, not a dead laptop.
- Count the blinks. HP caps-lock blink codes, Dell power-light patterns and Lenovo beep codes point at RAM, board or BIOS; note the pattern and tell us.
- Hard reset: unplug, hold the power button 20–30 seconds, plug in and try again. Harmless and occasionally enough.
- If you are comfortable and the RAM is accessible, reseat the module. Do nothing further inside.
What not to do
- Do not press on the screen or flex the lid; a cracked panel is a second repair.
- Do not keep force-restarting for an hour; if it is a power fault you can make it worse.
- Do not buy a screen because the screen is black. Half the time the screen is fine.

HP laptop screen black but caps lock blinking: what does it mean?
HP uses caps-lock blink patterns as error codes. Common patterns point at memory, the processor or the BIOS. Note how many long and short blinks you see and tell us; it saves diagnosis time.
Laptop turns on but no display and the fan is loud.
Fans at full speed with no picture usually mean the board started but the processor or graphics never reported in: RAM, GPU or PCH territory. It is diagnosable on the bench.
Could it just be the brightness or a sleep glitch?
Occasionally. Try the brightness keys and close-and-open the lid. A hard reset clears a stuck sleep state. If none of that helps, do the external-monitor test.
